The Alentejo Wine Region represents a third of the country. Located in the South area of Portugal among the Algarve and Setúbal wine region, you will find a huge list of wines and wine makers.
In most of the Lisbon restaurants and cafés, you will find the reds and white wines to serve at the table. You will find fine wines, rich and fruity, especially the reds. Alentejo wine region has also excellent white wines, however less popular, due to the hot climate. The quality will also depend on the skills of the cellars and vineyards.
Undulating plains and gentle hills are the common characteristic of the terrain. However, there are some higher mountains in the north east areas. Between Portalegre and Spain, the mountain rises up and the air will be cooler. The soils in Alentejo wine region may vary according to the location. By default, you will find granite, schist, pink marble, limestone with a sub-layer of clay.
You will find complex and fresh wines from the Portalegre area or more smooth, harmonious wines from Évora, Borba, Redondo and Reguengos. The DOP Alentejo is divided into eight sub-regions. You will find traditional methodology of the winemakers, however you will also discover innovation with new generations of producers. In addition, besides soil, innovation, tradition, new markets open to export, due to the dimension of some of the winemakers.
Alentejo Wine Region Grape Varieties
Depending on the wine region in Portugal, you will find more or less specific grape varieties. Alentejo is not an exception and you will discover it along the wine tastings in the region.
The most common local grapes are : Antão Vaz, Arinto, Roupeiro, Diagalves, Manteúdo, Rabo de Ovelha, Perrum. Aragonez ( also known as tempranillo ), Alfocheiro, Castelão, Trincadeira, Moreto, Tinta Caiada, Tinta Grossa.
There is also a presence of International Grape Varieties. The new generations of producers with focus on global products and distribution channels, started to produce and sell in different ways. You will find wines based on Alicante Bouschet, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
